The roots of the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis consist of private, proprietary law schools that operated in Indianapolis starting in the nineteenth century. A number of law schools operating in Indianapolis combined with the private Indiana Law School in 1894. In addition, law schools that taught classes in the evening merged into the Benjamin Harrison Law School in 1914, which itself merged with the Indiana Law School in 1936, thereafter offering both day and night classes.
